Blossoming in Business: Entrepreneurial Sprit Finds a New Home

How One Newcomer Student Shared Her Culture Through Entrepreneurship

At PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs, we believe entrepreneurship is more than just business, it’s a powerful way for students to express who they are and where they come from. For newcomer students, it’s also a unique opportunity to celebrate their culture while building confidence in a new environment.

Take Louise, a student at Pleasant Valley Elementary in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Originally from the Philippines, Louise brought with her not only a vibrant spirit but also entrepreneurial experience. Back home, she had a small business selling delicate, beautifully folded ribbon flowers.

At her new school in Canada, Louise recreated her signature scented roses as part of her PowerPlay project. Through each petal, she shared a piece of her culture and in return, gained something just as meaningful. “My nervousness went down, and I started socializing more and kept selling more,” she said.

With every rose she sold, Louise wasn’t just growing her business she was growing her confidence and sense of belonging. Her story is a reminder of the magic that happens when students are empowered to lead with their passions and share their roots.

This inspiring story, among many others, is made possible thanks to the generous support of Coastal Community Credit Union.
