Volunteer Spotlight: Connecting through Financial Education Locally

CIBC Volunteers from Coquitlam, BC visited local schools in their community to connect with students and share valuable insights about financial education.

“Financial literacy is a crucial skill for young entrepreneurs because it enables them to make informed decisions about budgeting, managing cash flow, and assessing risks, all of which are vital for building and sustaining a successful business,” said Liya Wang, Client Advice Manager. “One memorable moment from my visit was seeing the students actively participate in classroom discussions about their startup business plans, with a clear focus on setting financial goals aimed at making a profit. I was truly impressed by their understanding of the importance of profitability and their commitment to achieving it through thoughtful planning.”

Natalie de la Cruz, a Community General Manager, also shared her thoughts on the program's importance. “The PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs program lays a strong foundation for long-term success by teaching students practical business skills, encouraging innovative thinking, and fostering resilience. The program provides students with real-world entrepreneurial experiences, helping them develop communication and problem-solving skills. These competencies are valuable not only in business but in any future academic or career path they choose.”

The presence of CIBC volunteers in local communities through the PowerPlay project transforms learning from theory into real-world inspiration, showing students that they are part of something bigger.
